Like all the best (and worst đź« ) European projects, WEBJOU is also coming to an end. In this post, you will find the milestones and the results achieved thanks to our consortium and collaboration with the student community in the Balkans.

What is WEBJOU
WEBJOU (​​WEstern Balkan higher educational courses in data JOUrnalism) project aimed to promote knowledge exchange and multidisciplinary teaching and learning innovation in the Western Balkan reality.
The project focused on finding new ways to provide students with knowledge and skills from fields such as data science, statistics, visualization and communication, necessary to fruitfully operate in the data journalism and data communication frameworks.
Activities and results
The project started with a needs and best practices analysis, with a geographical focus on the Western Balkans. This work was the starting point for the design of six modular courses and curricula.
The courses focused on the following topics: Big Data, Data Visualization, statistical analysis, Geospatial representations, storytelling, and legislation on data property in EU (GDPR).
The learning resources were then tested with students in Albania and Kosovo. The results included many different kinds of works, like this digital work on capital punishment, or this piece on migration in Europe.
The overall satisfaction was high for both students and educators, which proved the need of having more projects focused on innovating education and the importance of working in hybrid environments, therefore making training more accessible.
Final event
In May 2025 the project will end with a final event in Italy, in Viterbo.
The event will feature a diverse range of speakers to explain how the intellectual outcomes impacted on the students’ journeys and how they were integrated by the participating educational institutions.
